Wine that leaves a good taste
Each year, on the third Sunday of November, Hospices de Beaune in Burgundy hosts a world-famous charity wine auction. In 2020, Hotel Ferdinand participated in the auction for the third time with the aim of supporting a good cause and win a barrel of white wine.
The charity auction at Hospices de Beaune builds on more than 150 years of tradition where barrels of wine have been put on auction annually. The wine comes from 60 hectares of vineyard estate that has been donated to the Hospices since its establishment in 1443.
Since the wines are put on auction when they are still young, buyers must exercise patience after bidding on the wines from Domaine des Hospices de Beaune. In 2018, Hotel Ferdinand bought its first barrel of white wine, a Meursault 1. cru "Charmes" Cuvée Albert Grivault. Since then, a local winemaker in Burgundy, Maison Albert Sounit, has matured and bottled the wine to make it ready for enjoyment in the hotel's restaurant in autumn 2020. The barrel of Volnay-Santenots 1. cru Cuvee Gauvain from the 2019 auction is expected to be ready in 2022.
With time, Ebbe Langhoff Gøgsig, Director at Hotel Ferdinand, plans to host charity dinners and wine auctions where the wines from Hospices de Beaune will once again give leverage to raising money for a good cause.
